Creatures in The Night
Darkness had befallen this sleepy hamlet in rural Virginia many hours ago. The wind whipped harshly down the street rattling the few trees left on the branches causing Lisa to look up at them startled. Laughing softly to herself she continued on down the street searching for the bed and breakfast where she was registered. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed a slight spark of movement. It was too quick to see anything so she brushed it off as nothing more then a cat or dog trying to find its way home.
She had come to the town because it was supposedly one of the most haunted in the county. All sorts of goblins, ghosts and demons were supposed to surface around Halloween. Thus far all she had found were inflated gas prices and the only ghosts and goblins that were to be found were the trick or treaters. Sorely disappointed she decided to wander around town until well after dark ignoring the warnings of an elderly lady who said she should be back indoors locked behind doors before the sun had set. When she asked the woman why she should heed the warning the old woman softly whispered in an almost reverent tone that if she didn't then "it" would come for her.
She politely smiled and nodded walking out without giving it another thought. She continued walking down the street and then the calm of the evening was interrupted by a loud noise almost an explosion though she saw no flash of light. Stopping to look around she heard an ungodly shriek come from a house just up the street. Instead of turning away she ran for the house intent on saving whoever might be inside.
When she found the house the door had been shattered on their hinges almost as if someone had fired a cannon into it at point blank range destroying it. She called out into the house for permission to enter but receiving no response she slowly made her way up the steps pulling a small but powerful flashlight out of her purse shining it through the door.
The body was laid out as though a predator were displaying its kill to an admiring audience. The limbs were twisted at unnatural angles and the clothes bulged out from where the bones had broken through the skin. She couldn't get a good look at the face but swallowing her fear she slowly walked inside playing her flashlight over the walls noticing the arterial spray all over the walls. The blood was still very fresh as it slowly dripped down the walls like miniature branches of some obscene river. Kneeling beside the corpse she kept her eyes trained forward looking for whatever had done this. Reaching down with her hand she tried to feel for a pulse as her hand came down and started feeling she stopped suddenly turning her head looking down.
The neck of the victim had been torn out. She could see the vertebrae of the spinal column through the empty cavity. Looking to the left she sees where the mangled muscles and been ripped from his throat. His lips were flecked with blood but worst of all was his face. His face was a frozen in a horrible mask of terror, surprise, and confusion. Strangely she felt herself being pulled deeper into the house deciding to confront this killer and try and call the police. She carefully made her way up the stairs when she heard a faint sound. Reaching the top of the landing she peered into the first room at the top of the stairs staring rooted to the spot at the scene in front of her.
A large man stood there. He was clad in a simple black shirt and pants but it was evident that even under the clothing he was muscular. His ears were large and almost bat-like in appearance. His eyes though...it was his eyes that made her freeze. They were black soulless depths that nothing could escape from; twin black holes were these creatures' eyes. Turning to her he hissed softly then turned his attention back to the girl on the bed. She was young perhaps 14 years old and shaking whimpering softly looking at Lisa with large pleading eyes. Begging her silently to save her from this horror to help her. The creature leaned over her and the girl let out a small shriek that was cut off as it bit into her neck. A trickle of blood ran down its chin. Its throat was moving slowly...drinking. It suddenly hit Lisa as though a sudden storm. That THING was a vampire. They DID exist and she was NEXT. Turning all thoughts except those of survival fleeing her as she ran down the stairs past the corpse.
Hearing a window shatter behind her she turns watching the vampire land in the street baring its gore spattered teeth at her. Breath hitching in her chest she kept running down the street as it ran behind her in a blurred streak. Catching her easily from behind it grabbed her in a vice like grip spraying its rancid and copper scented breath all over her face slowly breathing into it. "I am Carnac, I am of the undead, take pleasure in that with your death my life continues."
With that the vampire bit into her neck and started to drink dropping her corpse to the ground and fading back to its lair before the first suns rays struck the ground where the corpse were. The sleepy town of Shiloh, Virginia had no that one of the oldest evils to walk the earth had decided to pay a visit to their humble community.
