Icarus (A trust betrayed?)

Poem

Innocent Icarus wings tipped in gold,

Yearns towards an impossible goal.

Seeing the glory of fiery desire,

Blind his he to the heat of the fire.

Trusting that such beauty could bring no pain,

He forces his wings to resist the strain.

He pummels arms trussed in feathers and steel,

Knowing how the mighty eagles must feel.

He looks and sees his father far below and away,

Shouting the danger of the fiery display.

Yet deaf his he to all who would help,

Resigned to his quest of useless hope.

The further he strives against the air,

The greater his feeling of lonely despair.

Persevering beyond primitive pride,

He forces himself on with inhuman drive.

He thinks back to his father far below,

Knowing that back to him he could not go.

Living the freedom that this new world gives,

He hopes that he can enjoy it for as long as he lives.

So in strength he pursues the hardest of goals,

Knowing what any but the fool must know.

He does not want to reach the beautiful fire,

The ultimate striving is all he desires.

As the wax holding his wings starts to melt,

A slight sigh of sadness is felt.

He knows that none will understand his quest,

Or the feelings of the heart in his chest.

Further and further he flies,

Feathers burning and falling, his wings decline.

Not yet willing to end his flight,

He needs the fire to notice without despite.

So he calls out his voice still clear,

Despite the rising of his mortal fear.

The fire may have noticed his needful calls,

When finally his wings burn away, he falls.

His body burnt up by this harshest of quests,

His heart stops beating at his own behest.

He falls faster even than light,

His body burning away into the night.

When finally the fire notices his flight,

She calls out trying to end his plight.

When she thinks that all is lost,

She sees what cannot be, what is wanted most.

Fair Icarus ascends once more,

Wings more his own than the previous pair.

Carving golden arcs through the air,

Lighter than life he rises to her.

Immune now to flame and fire,

He shows her the strength gained from desire.

She accepts him at last having no fear,

Trusting him in his death sincere.

So he stays there at her side,

Golden wings displayed in innocent pride.

A symbol of his sacrifice it his clear,

But, for him, more than worth it this one held dear.

And finally when those below despair,

They find the shattered remains of Icarus once fair.

His Father and others bury him where his body does lie,

Blind to the twin fires high in the sky.

icarus, son of daedalus, young and foolish. Wax melted, he fell from the sun, who couldn't stand anyone being close to capture its beauty.
