Runaway
Romance and Science Fiction
Fear envelopes my whole body, coursing through it like a raging river. I try not to let my body shake. Shaking will wake Katie up, who is sleeping ever so peacefully with her head in my lap. I hear her soft breathing, so peaceful and quiet and my heart bleeds. She shouldn't have to go through this. The only worry in Katie's life should be whether or not the boy she fancies likes her back, not this. I breathe in deeply, trying to steady my nerves. The night air is cool against my face, and I feel the beginnings of mist waft past my face, soaking into my pores as it spreads its tendrils through the thin air. Somewhere overhead thunder rumbles, causing Katie to flinch in my lap. I open my eyes, smoothing my face over so she cannot see the fear tearing my insides apart. She sits up, stretching out her lithe body. "What time is it?" she mumbles, wrapping her jacket around her. She had been using it as a pseudo blanket while she slept. "Almost quarter to. Any minute now," I murmured in reply. I stared at Katie, trying to analyze her features. Worry marked lines across her face, making her look older than the fifteen years she really was. "I'm going to the bathroom," she said softly. "Do you want me to come with you?" I asked, biting my lip. I felt nervous at the suggestion of splitting up, even if it was just to go the bathroom. We had come this far, and who knows what would happen in a such a short amount of time. What is They cam and found me? Katie wouldn't know what to do, where to go. She was dependent on me, dependent on me to get us to safety. Or relative safety. Katie shook her head, standing up. "I'm fine, honest. I'll be back soon." And she walked away. I let her go. I watched as she walked away, tilting her head to her left, then right, ever so slightly, watching to see if she was being followed, and not just by me. I watched as she disappeared into the bathroom, the same intensity of fear building its way through my stomach. Was this the way our life was going to be from now on, in this brave new world? A world of fear, of constantly watching our backs, of running away? Only time could tell. And it all depended on us getting to London without being caught.
